Question 3 Mock GCSE Exam Questions

Question 3 Mock GCSE: What Issues of Representation Have I Presented?

One issue of representation in my magazine is maybe that it is too girly. This is because of the candy pink/purple background I have made, regardless I am still keeping the background Because it brings a eye-catching talent with it.

A second problem  is the photo of Simon Cowel on the front. It is a problem because it is not as appealing to teenage girls as I would like it to be, however I was not able to find a high resolution image of Eric Cowel (his recent son).

Question 2 Mock GCSE Exam Questions

Question 2 Mock GCSE: What are the effects of my layout, typography, colour choice and language choice?

My magazine is arranged so that there are two small stories on the left and a larger story on the right, making the magazine visually balanced. My magazine title and top story are positioned at the top of the cover and the credit for the cover designer (me) is placed neatly in the bottom left.

On my lifestyle magazine cover, the magazine title and subtitle are typed in a italics-y, written font. This is to the eye towards the cover of my magazine as opposed to others. Apart from these illustrated titles, the rest of the text on the cover is in the sans serif, 'Arial' font, although this may be changed if I decide it is to plain.

I have given 'Gossip Girls' a pink/purple striped background to make it appealing to teenage girls and this also acts to draw the eye away from more dully coloured magazines. Around the photo of Simon Cowel, I have placed a white oval so as to differentiate it from the pink/purple background.

Along side all of the previous statements, I would like to give notice to my choice of language in the stories around the edge of the magazine. I have written the story headers so that they sound more interesting than just stating the facts. An example of this is shown in the title on the bottom right: "Do You belieber in Jail?".

PS: I should have my cover ready and on the blog by next week.

Question 1 Mock GCSE Exam Questions

Question 1 Mock GCSE: What Two Conventions Have I Used and Why?

I have used a celebrity (Simon Cowel) to attract readers to my magazine. I chose Simon Cowel because of his recent baby, and thought this would appeal to teenage girls. Also, X-Factor may appeal to teenage girls and this would be a story to entice viewers to read the magazine.

This is a good start and you have the basics here. However, this does not have a huge amount of detail and you will need to explain your answer more.

Tasks 2 and 3 for Lifestyle Magazines

Why does the magazine use a model or celebrity on the cover? Why are they looking directly at the camera? Explain the effect on the target audience.

The reason the magazine has a celebrity on the front cover is so that they will draw more attention than they would without one. The bigger and more well known the celebrity, the more people will buy the magazine and they gain higher standing towards competitors. The fact that the celebrity is looking directly at the camera makes it as though the magazine is addressing you.

Balance in Lifestyle Magazines

Balance in Lifestyle Magazines

This magazine is balanced because the celebrity is in the centre and when there is a big title on one side there is also a small one on the other. It could also be symmetrical because there are three stories on each side with the title in the centre-top.

This magazine is asymmetrical because the right side is completely blank, where as the title and stories are covering the left side.
Although asymmetrical this magazine is balanced because when there is a small title on one side there is a big one on the other.

This magazine cover is asymmetrical and is not position balanced but it is shape balanced instead. The left titles balance number against size to the right tile.

This magazine shows textural balance because the model is clear and sharp where as the background is blurred.

This magazine has quite literarily radial balance as there are sun rays emanating from just above the centre of the front cover.

Media Homework - Typography

Font 1: I think this font is a very original serif font with a stencil-like design, making it look suited to army use.
Font 2: I think Lego chose this font for it's child like font (bubble writing and italics).
Font 3: I think this is a very typewriter-ish font but without any smudges or blots. It has become a very popular trade mark all over the world but I do not like it.
Font 4: I think this is a crazily drawn font for parties or arty occasions because of the lean and shape of the letters.
Font 5: I think this is a very retro font for any one using a theme of 1970 to 90s because of the technology level.
Font 6: There is not much of this font to go on apart from that is a very simple sans serif font but is slightly different to other fonts because of the floating X.

My favorite font is Bank Gothic, because I found a very good 1980s hacking game and this font reminds me of it. This font has the feel of a dark room at the centre of a New York apartment block, with a green-texted computer and sheets and sheets of IP addresses and passwords.

GREEN

Really good piece of work with the right amount of detail and analysis. Well Done.

Contents And Use Of Techniques In The Magazine Covers

Contents And Use Of Techniques In The Magazine Covers

1. This cover contains the obligatory model/celebrity and presents short snippets of information from inside the magazine in a unique format / colour scheme; for middle aged, gossip craving, home owners. But Simon Cowel's face looks like it has been photo-shopped onto his body, making it look like he does not like the way he looks already.

2. This cover is colourful and outstanding. The text is big and bold, trying to attract attention from the target audience (Young to middle aged adults) with the most interesting pages tagged on the cover. The front cover is very energetic and therefore shows the magazine is mainly about exercise.

3. This cover is much sparser than the other two. It has a colourful, bubble font, title and subtitle. There are only three items on the front, one of which is an advert. the magazine is for the physically disabled and so has fewer titles to confuse the readers.

4. Candis is a pink coloured magazine for women, aged 30 to 60. It contains health tips and interesting stories on the front cover.

5. This magazine's front cover is coloured to fit Jennifer Lopez's face with brown-orange subtitles and a light blue heading. It has what they think is the most interesting page tag at the bottom in a large font size.
